Sam Bissell was born in Dubuque, Iowa, raised in Darien, Connecticut and moved to Colorado in the late 1960s. In the mid-1970’s, he picked up his first SLR camera and under the guidance of photographer Mars Harper, learned darkroom techniques and graphic design at Arapahoe Community College, in Littleton, Colorado.

Due to circumstances, Sam changed careers in 1979, working in the restaurant business until 2000, when he changed careers again.

This time he studied horticulture at Denver Botanic Gardens, earning his Rocky Mountain Gardener’s Certificate. Merging his passion for horticulture with his love of digital photography, his eye for color and design within an image launched his present career. Sam continues to refine and redefine his craft and technique with contemplative images to enhance his favorite subjects: nature, landscape, daily life, and “electric” visions to stimulate the eyes and mind.

As always, Sam writes poetry, which he has done since the age of 9, and has never put down the Chef’s tools he used for the 25 years he was in the restaurant business.
